  • The Promise and Perils of Insect Farming | Open Philanthropy (15 minutes)

Insect farming is on the rise, and is often praised as a sustainable alternative to traditional animal meat. However, such praise may rest on an assumption that insect suffering doesn’t matter or isn’t possible, leading to the potential for a silent, ongoing (and rapidly growing) ethical catastrophe.

  • Insects raised for food and feed — global scale, practices, and policy - Rethink Priorities (15 minutes)

    • Farming Practices and Conditions

This section describes some of the specific practices in insect farming and their ethical implications. (This is still very under-discussed in animal welfare circles, and may be of great moral concern.)

  • Improving pest management for wild insect welfare (5 minutes)

Pesticide use may be the cause of enormous levels of insect suffering. This reading introduces the problem, which directly impacts wild insects (a group particularly neglected in animal welfare).
